Carefree, witty, quirky, health conscious, have messy hair and a lover of nature. I love how hipsters can care less about how they dress and they just seem to follow their hearts. Now before someone throws stones at me, I know that this love evolved through my personal relationship with Jesus. However, let me share a little more about what I love about hipsters before I get spiritual. I love how hipsters tend to reject attitudes of mainstream consumers. Most don’t spend tons of money on trying to look Hollywood and they just seem to not have to put much effort into being cool. I understand that you may not feel the same way as I do about hipsters, but hear me out, I’m sure all of my readers know at least one hipster.

So, (I) we were born to be different. The harder I (we) try to be like others, the more uncomfy I get living in my own skin. People pleasing, acting, talking or dressing like others just doesn’t fit me. Trying to live up to the worlds standards makes me feel like I am in a mental and emotional prison. I remember the other day someone said “are you really Puerto Rican?” because I didn’t follow the “traditions of most Ricans.” I only laugh because although I am very proud of my culture, I am also saddened by many things in my culture. I don’t try to be like others but I want to be everything God created me to be. I thrive when I go after my heart because they are desires that God has placed in me. We are called to be set apart, to not follow the culture around us but to live a heavenly culture, which we know is not very common. Heaven’s culture brings freedom, joy, love, hope and peace. Again, when I watch hipsters, they seem to have some of these fruits. My prayer is that I could minister to hipsters that don’t know Jesus and see them flourish into Spirt-filled individuals. Oh that would be so fun!

I pray that all of us learn to love ourselves and appreciate how God created us. Whether weird, different, corny, or even a square to others, remember even squares can be cool. Be free, feel the liberation that God wants to give you and go change the world!

Is there any area of your life that you realize you want to be free in? Whats holding you back?
